Today, we have something special for you: a tour of the idyllic Ben Huon Manor, a hidden gem in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, where I am fortunate to live and run my businesses.

Situated in the picturesque town of Robertson, this stunning property, built just over 26 years ago, draws inspiration from English country estates of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Designed by furniture designer, chef, and stylist James Salmond and his wife Sandie, the property was constructed in collaboration with James's parents.

About Ben Huon Manor

When I first saw Ben Huon Manor, I was immediately captivated by its beautiful blend of antique and contemporary elements, idyllic gardens, manicured lawns, and classic stone facade.

Its Georgian Gothic architecture would fit perfectly in the English Cotswolds, yet it also feels right at home here in the Highlands.

The Manor boasts several stunning Georgian-style architectural details, including Tudor arches, a stone facade, classic symmetry, dry stone walls, and double-hung windows.

Stair

As you step inside the Manor, you're greeted by a stunning gothic-inspired staircase impressively crafted by James and his father.

The entryway leads you to spacious areas like the large living room, a cozy library nook, a fully equipped kitchen, and an elegant dining room with a gorgeous garden outlook.

There is also accommodation for up to ten people across five bedrooms—three in the main house and two in the wing.

Within each of the Manor's rooms, you will find a curated selection of furniture pieces including plush sofas, wingback studded leather and upholstered armchairs, ottomans, and rustic wooden coffee tables and chests.

Some of the antique pieces that caught my eye included the chippy antique bedsides, the 1820s Gustavian hand-painted pedestals, and other unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.

The Lighting

I also enjoyed seeing the diverse array of light fixtures, some of which included polished brass banker’s lamps, forged iron swing-arm lamps, French scalloped floor lamps, contemporary wall sconces with fabric shades, and more.

Texture and Materials

The layering of texture and materials was evident in the sheer linen curtains and quality fabric drapes that adorned the Georgian windows, along with black-out-blinds in the bedrooms, and plantation shutters for privacy.

Other textiles included Egyptian cotton bed linen, cosy waffle blankets and throws, and decorative cushions in single-tone and nature-inspired prints.

Living Energy

Lastly, living energy was seen with bunches of hydrangeas, magnolia leaves, and other seasonal foliage, adding colour, beauty, and vitality to the rooms.

Ben Huon Manor Courtyard & Gardens

The property featured a stunning pebbled courtyard that connected the main house to the wing and garden. This courtyard was framed by potted boxwoods and included a beautiful seating area.

Additionally, the semi-formal garden provided a calming oasis, offering views of the surrounding countryside for a private and tranquil atmosphere.

Ben Huon Manor Hospitality and Amenities

Some of the comforts we enjoyed included relaxing and chatting by the cozy indoor fireplace, enjoying one of the best cheese platters I’ve ever had, having access to the fully-equipped kitchen, and enjoying our breakfast in the tranquil dining room.

Lastly, there were other delightful touches such as Aesop toiletries, all the necessary amenities presented in rattan holders, and the custom monogrammed towels and bathrobes featuring Ben Huon Manor’s signature crest.
