The Creative Process: Inspired by Nature
Charles draws inspiration from nature, crafting shapes like trees, birds, leaves, and shells. Paper's versatility allows him to bring these organic forms to life, enhanced by his crumpling technique, reminiscent of intricate origami, which produces patterns reflecting natural geometry.
When creating luminaires, Charles carefully folds the paper to ensure stability; as pleating provides structure.
For larger sculptures like trees, he works with more delicate paper, which is then tightly compressed for strength. Metal frameworks are then used to stabilise these creations, especially at branches and roots, and accommodate magnets for customisation, such as hanging leaves and other nature-inspired adornments.
