As we transition into the cooler months here in Australia, it's the perfect time to infuse our homes with the warmth and comfort that autumn brings. From rich colours to cosy textures, here are ten tips to help you create a welcoming autumn-inspired interior:

Tip #1

Autumnal Colour Palette

Start by setting a warm and inviting tone with your colour palette. This is one of the reasons we love having a backdrop of warm neutrals, as it allows you to have more versatility in incorporating seasonal and festive accent colours throughout the year.

Embrace rich, earthy tones like deep reds, burnt oranges, sage green, muted blue, rust, and golden yellows.

At their core, these tones originated from clay earth pigments, such as umber, ochre, and sienna, and are made by mixing complementary hues.

These Autumnal hues can be incorporated with our colourful French dinner candles, and soft furnishings like cushions, throws, and table linen.

Tip #2

Cosy Textures:

Next, the layering of texture and materials plays a crucial role in creating a cosy atmosphere.

Layer plush area rugs over hardwood floors and drape chunky knit blankets over sofas and armchairs.

Add an element of surprise by pairing single-toned cushions alongside hand-block prints, or embroidered fabrics, such as those by Ralph Lauren Home, Libeco Linen, Walter G, or the vintage art designs by Barbara O’Donnovan.

In the bedroom, swap out lightweight bedding for heavier linens and invest in a soft, sumptuous duvet cover for extra warmth on chilly nights.

Opt for warm and sumptuous textiles like velvet or faux fur cushions, heavy-weight linens, chunky knit blankets, cashmere throws, mohair textiles, and sheepskins, to enhance comfort.

We also love introducing thicker bath & hand towels, washcloths, and bathmats made from dense and soft cotton to create a spa-like feel.

Lastly, change out your window treatments for heavier drapes and thermally lined curtains to keep the warmth in at night.

Tip #3

Play with Pattern

A new season is a beautiful opportunity to introduce new patterns and prints.

Look for botanical prints, leaf or feather motifs, and plaid patterns on cushions, throws, and table linens. Mix and match patterns for an eclectic look, or keep it cohesive with a single theme throughout your decor.

Some other ideas include florals, stripes, checks, tartan, and animal prints such as deer, birds, or horses, for a whimsical touch.

As cushion covers and table linen are compact and smaller in scale, they can easily be stored away between seasons and swapped out as desired.

Tip #4

Focus on Natural Materials

Incorporate natural materials like rattan, jute, cane, and unfinished wood for a relaxed and inviting feel.

Decorative trays, storage baskets, and furniture made from these materials add warmth and texture to your space and their raw finishes and organic pigments perfectly complement the rustic surroundings of autumn, creating a grounded and harmonious atmosphere.

Tip #5

Layered Lighting

As the days get shorter, create a warm and inviting ambiance with layered lighting.

Look for opportunities to position additional table and floor lamps in corners, on accent tables, and in the bedroom for an inviting feel.

Consider incorporating mood lighting like fairy lights, battery-operated candles, and hurricane lanterns for a cozy glow that mimics the flicker of a fireplace.

Tip #6

Elevate your Fireplace and Mantel

Make your fireplace the focal point of your autumn decor by arranging logs, displaying fire tools, and adding seasonal accents like lichen-covered branches and pine cones to the mantel.

Choose quality accessories like the sleek Eldvarm range or opt for a more relaxed aesthetic with wicker or timber baskets to enhance the cozy atmosphere. Introduce a quality collection of fire tools, log baskets, tongs, a brush and shovel and blow poker.

Autumnal Scents

Set the mood with seasonal scents that evoke the essence of autumn. Swap out summery florals and citrus notes for smoky, warming, and earthy fragrances like spiced vanilla, chai spice, and cinnamon.

Infuse your home with these inviting aromas through candles, diffusers, or potpourri for a sensory experience that enhances the cosy ambiance.

Tip #9

Decorative Accents

Accessorize your home with carefully curated accents that celebrate the season, focusing on the entryway, mantelpiece, and tablescape.

Adorn your entryway with an autumnal wreath made from dried leaves, branches, and acorns for a warm welcome.

Other entryway decor may include a seagrass wall decoration, a pair of rattan storage baskets or trays, boot racks, an umbrella holder, plaid, striped or hopsack cushions on entryway benches, handmade earthenware, wooden objects, and a fragrant candle.

Autumn tablescape

If you are looking for ways to embrace earth tones year-round, consider large-scale artwork such as:

  • Handcrafted sculptural objects made from iron, wood, marble, or ceramic.
  • Woven art & decorative baskets
  • Fabric hanging wall art.
  • Framed dried botanicals.
  • & nature-inspired photography & prints.

To add vibrancy to your tablescape, include natural centerpieces in earthy tones, along with handcrafted ceramic or glass jugs, flax linen napkins, round rattan placemats, and coordinating napkin holders. Consider incorporating items like Linoroom's natural linen table linens adorned with nature motifs and our Arabesque bowls and plates, which showcase intricate leaf, vine, and ornament patterns.

Lastly, bring warmth to mantelpiece vignettes with antlers, brass candlesticks, and decor pieces in wood, woven materials, and ceramic or mouth-blown vases.
